About 150 years ago, Bolpur was a small village, but now it is a bustling city. While in the earlier years, it was a typical village, with no rail-lines or developed roads. History of Bolpur

The name 'Bolpur' derives from the word 'Boli-pur', (Boli meaning 'Slaughter', and pur meaning 'City'). Therefore, Bolipur means 'The City of Slaughter' or 'The Slaughter City'. About 150 years ago Bolpur was a small village under the supur porgana. While, Kalikapur a well-known place of Bolpur, was said to be the origin of the typical village in the earlier years. History of Bolpur is closely linked with English East India Company. The city got the first taste pf modernization wth the establishment of Bolpur railway station in 1860. Along with this, court, police station, sub registry office, etc., were established in old Bolpur. Then people started residing here. Later, Christan missionaries founded a church called 'Mission compound'. During those years, there were around 19 husking machines were there adding conveniences to the people of Bolpur.

There were some of the legends like Maharshi Debendranath Tagore as well as Rabindranath Tagore who became the main reason for the development of the Bolpur city. Maharshi Debendranath launched religious mediation centers, while Rabindranath Tagore established Visva Bharati Viswavidyalaya. These are the main cause for the large extension, as well as development and popularity of the Bolpur. There are some more commercial centers such as 'Kachharipatti' which is beside the court house, and 'Trishulapatti' is another commercial place which is popular for the paddy trading.
